Carrie Elzie, PhD, MA, serves as Assistant Dean, Accreditation and Institutional Effectiveness and Professor at Alice L. Walton School of Medicine.

Carrie Elzie, PhD, MA, serves as Assistant Dean, Accreditation and Institutional Effectiveness and Professor at Alice L. Walton School of Medicine. In this role, she ensures that AWSOM is in alignment with the highest level of accreditation standards, as well as driving institutional effectiveness and strategic planning efforts.

Prior to joining the School, Dr. Elzie was Professor of Foundational Sciences and Director of Faculty Development at Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She also serves as a Survey Team Member and Team Secretary for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and a question writer for the National Board of Medical Examiners. She has research experience in humanism within medical education, gamification, virtual reality, and student empathy. Dr. Elzie received a bachelor’s degree in biology at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina, and a doctorate in pathology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She completed a medical education postdoctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, and most recently received a master’s degree in organizational leadership from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Dr. Elzie is a member of IAMSE, the International Association of Medical Education, and served on the IAMSE Board of Directors from 2022 to 2025. She serves as a reviewer for the journals Anatomical Sciences Education, Academic Pathology, BMC Medical Education, The Anatomical Record, and Medical Science Educator. She has presented research nationally and has earned over 450 thousand dollars in funding from national granting agencies.
