Jessica Atrio, MD, MSc

Jessica Atrio, MD, MSc, serves as Associate Dean, Clinical Research at Alice L. Walton School of Medicine. In this role, she is responsible for the School’s clinical research activities, including the strategic direction of research opportunities for students and relationships with clinical research partners.

Prior to joining the School, Dr. Atrio was Professor, Physician, and Vice Chair, Research in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health at Montefiore Health System in the Bronx, New York.

Dr. Atrio is a reproductive and sexual health physician with expertise in clinical research and has contributed to phase I through IV clinical trials on HPV prevention, STD prevention, and sexual health products. Her spearheading and publication of a phase IV clinical trial to study interactions between contraception and antivirals in women living with HIV influenced the World Health Organization’s international criteria for contraceptive use. Her research of medical management of early pregnancy loss was incorporated into the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) national guidelines.

Dr. Atrio received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Columbia University, a master’s of clinical science in epidemiology from University of Southern California, and a medical degree from New York University.

Dr. Atrio is board-certified in General Obstetrics & Gynecology and Complex Family Planning. She completed an obstetrics and family planning residency at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and a fellowship in family planning at the University of Southern California Los Angeles.

Dr. Atrio is a Fellow of ACOG and the Society of Family Planning, a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology and a member of Physicians for Reproductive Health and the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals.

Dr. Atrio is a reviewer for Journal of the Southern Medical Association, Journal of AIDS and Clinical Research, Obstetrics and Gynecology (Green Journal), Contraception, JAIDS, European Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, Journal of the American Medical Association, and Reproductive, Female and Child Health. She is a member of the editorial board for Austin Journal of Women’s Health.
