Marie Berenguer, PhD
Assistant Professor, Genetics/Cell and Molecular Biology

Marie Berenguer, PhD, serves as Assistant Professor, Genetics/Cell and Molecular Biology at Alice L. Walton School of Medicine. In this role, she is developing and delivering the School’s Genetics/Cell and Molecular Biology curriculum.
Prior to joining the School, Dr. Berenguer served as Adjunct Faculty for the Reproductive Clinical Science PhD Program at Eastern Virginia Medical School. She also served as Adjunct Faculty at Sanford Burnham Prebys in La Jolla, California and Teaching Assistant at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute.
Dr. Berenguer received a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and doctorate at University of Bordeaux, France. She completed a PhD fellowship at the Ministry of Research and Higher Education in France.
Dr. Berenguer has significant research experience in Genetics and Developmental Biology. Her thesis work led to the identification of genes involved in a rare developmental disorder called the Oculo-Auriculo-Vertebral spectrum. Her postdoctoral research at Sanford Burnham Prebys focused on the impact of Retinoic Acid Signaling during embryonic development.
Dr. Berenguer received a Jeanne Jones and Kathryn Fishback Fishman Fund Prize of $10,000 in recognition of her outstanding research work. She was co-chair of the Sanford Burnham Prebys Science Network, where she organized four annual research symposiums as well as volunteered for an outreach science program for the Fleet Science Museum in San Diego, California.
